RESPECTING THOSE WHO CHALLENGES YOUR BELIEF.

It seems as though in today’s age we can’t go a single day without hearing about yet another tragedy spawned from hatred or conflicting beliefs. Why is it that some humans feel the need to judge others’ whom are different than they are? What does it matter? Why is your life more valuable than that of someone who may live a life opposite of your own? These are questions I ask myself daily.

When talking with a group of friends recently, we came to the topic of acceptance and how it is a trait that severely lacking from so many of today’s individuals. Like the people that inhabit our nation, my group of friends is very diverse, and we relish in the fact that we all bring different personalities, beliefs and ideas to the friendship. We sat and discussed the horror that has occurred in our country and across the world, finally coming to the conclusion that everyone deserves respect.

Despite what you believe, or have been taught, it is in no way acceptable to put down another human being for living with their own beliefs, and it is unbelievable that one would deem taking another’s life as okay due to conflicting lifestyles. I understand being firm in what you believe and not letting others skew your views, but hatred of any sort is not okay.

Taking time to learn about different cultures, lifestyles and beliefs will allow you to become more insightful. With knowledge comes understanding, but with ignorance comes hatred. We are not meant to understand everything in life, and we are most certainly not supposed to know the mind of every individual, but remembering that each person is different helps you grasp an understanding of others and their lives.

For every individual you believe to be “different,” recognize the fact that they are most likely viewing you as different as well. Diversity is what makes daily life interesting, and something to be cherished. You do not have to agree with everyone, but it is your job as an honorable human being, and American, to treat others with the respect that they deserve.

When you come in contact with people that have different believe from yours, do not try to make them inferior or belittled. Just be nice to them while still believing in your own belive.
